Are Rollout Caravans Awnings Any Good?

Rollout caravans have been around for a long time and the question to ask today is, are still relevant to date? Are they better than the rest? Every type of awning has its season and caravan owners own multiple types for different seasons. Larger awnings for example are suitable for long stays while smaller ones like rollout awnings are only suitable for weekend or one or two days getaways. Rollout caravan awnings are best suited for a three-day gateway. They are smaller and that is the reason they are sometimes called sun canopies. So when you are planning for a three-day getaway, take with you a rollout canopy for convenience. If you don’t see the need to fully enclose the space, rollout awnings are a better option.

How to fix a rollout awning to a caravan

Attaching a rollout awning to a caravan is easy, simply fit a rollout awning to the rails on one side of the caravan. Just like you would to any other type of awning. While avid caravanners can fit the rollout awning permanently onto one side, it is not wise to do so because seasons change and you would not want your canopy to endure weather elements for a long time. If you are leaving your rollout awning on the caravan, you can expect it to get dirt and build-up of biofilm and other organisms that grow along the rails.

Fixing a rollout awning to a rail is not easy, it weighs approximately 25kg on its own hence not easy to connect on your own. Ensure the rails are well lubricated hence you will require oil to ensure the rails are well-lubricated for easy installation. When you want to lubricate the rails, you should use a specific type of lube that would not dirty the fabric and do not get sticky.

Benefits of installing a rollout awning

It takes little or no storage space. Unlike other types of awnings that require a storage space inside of the caravan or on the tow car. It will not take up space because it is rolled up into the side rail hence no internal space is required for storage. If your awning came with a side panel, that is the only thing that requires a small space for storage inside the caravan.

Rollout awnings are easy and quick to install, it is a no-brainer, just roll out to install and roll in to remove. Unlike other types of awnings, you could spend an hour or two unpacking the awning. Another benefit of rollout awning is that it can become a sun canopy but when you want it to look like other awnings add side covers and you are good to go.

Drawbacks for rollout awnings: there are two drawbacks for rollout awnings, damage during towing. Some rollout awnings use straps to fasten onto the rails while others use metal buttons that make dents on the rails hence giving a bad impression of the caravan body. Lastly, the rollout awnings leave an impact on the payload of the caravan. 20-25 kg is not easy to tow. The issue with the payload is that it is tricky but the caravan comes with a stipulated payload and the rollout awning adds significant weight to it.

There are different types of rollout caravan awnings that will suit your every need.
